The shaded pole motor is a type of AC (alternating current) electric motor that is commonly used in small applications where a low starting torque is required. It is named after the shading coil or ring, which is a copper or aluminum coil that is wound around a portion of the motor's poles.
The shaded pole motor works by inducing a magnetic field in the rotor (the rotating part of the motor) using the shading coil. When the AC power is applied to the motor, a magnetic field is generated in the stator (the stationary part of the motor) which creates an eddy current in the shading coil. This eddy current causes a magnetic field to be produced in the shaded portion of the pole, which is shifted in space relative to the unshaded portion of the pole. The resulting unbalanced magnetic field causes the rotor to turn, and start the motor.
Shaded pole motors are simple in construction and relatively inexpensive to manufacture, making them a popular choice for small household appliances such as fans, blowers, and refrigeration units. However, they are less efficient than other types of AC motors and have a low power-to-weight ratio, limiting their use in higher-power applications. They also have a limited speed range and are not easily controlled, making them less suitable for applications where precise speed control is required.
